Cartoon.

Just finished a short commission to make a cartoon as a leaving gift (below.)  Customer was satisfied, the brief was followed and the deadline was kept to. :)

Watching the news on BBC News Channel last night I was filled with discussed at the obviously mutually abusive, mutually beneficial relationship between the reporters and the politicians and I git an idea for a cartoon.  I was offended by the way the media present issues as if they were an episode in a soap opera (I don’t watch soap operas) and the politicians act down to it to get air time.  Sorry if my cartoon offends.

Studio Frogs Use a Brush Set.

I was approached today by Yoshie Kohama of Studio Frogs, a publishing and design company in Japan to use the Adobe Illustrator paisley brush set which I have up on Deviantart.   The set has been up for quite a while now and I had quite forgotten about them (I made them for a specific job whilst I was a student) so it was nice they have been found and will be useful beyond Deviantart.

Yoshie described the book as a beginners guide to Illustrator and the brushes will be included on a companion disk as an immediately handy resource for the neophyte vectorist to use as they experiment with the software.

Was a nice surprise to get the email and a bit of recognition of ones work is always welcome :)

Book Release in September

I just heard from Martin Dawber, author of the Big Book of Fashion Illustration: A World Sourcebook of Contemporary Illustration that his new book The Big Book of Contemporary Illustration will be out on September 1st 2009.  The book has two of my kayaking illustrations which I displayed at New Designers 2008 in the lifestyle section. The cover (below) is by Joseph Gonzalez from Northwest Indiana.

I am pretty excited about the books release as it will put some of my work in front of a potentially huge audience with a worldwide release. I am still proud of the kayaking/white water series in fact I hope to extend the series and even to present them at a couple of galleries later this year.

Further bulletins as events warrant!

PS: The link to the book above is to the US Amazon site, its coming soon to the UK site apparently.

Advertising and putting myself about…

I have been putting myself about a bit recently.  Online mostly as I have been a bit unwell but the joy of the internet is that, with a laptop, its just as accessible from bed!

Firstly, I have added my details to People4Business.Com which is part of guardian newspapers network.  It lists freelancer details, making it easier for potential employers to find you.  Further details as events warrant!!

Secondly, being bedbound I have spent a LOT of time  on Facebook.  I am beginning to appreciate it’s benefits as a tool for networking, not just a way of keeping in touch with your mates (or playing games which are far too addictive!)

I have added a group for the Hit&Run Art Show which takes place on Sunday August 16th at The Mere @ Ellesmere (see the image below.)  I have to say I have had a pretty good response to the group posting and to the Event invite I sent out later this week!  I also was interviewed live by BBC Radio Shropshire about the event, garnering more publicity and artists for the day :)  I met with Sarah Stokes and Phil Barratt today and we finalised some of the events which will be going on during the day including an absolute beginners life drawing class which will be part of The Big Draw and displayed in a gallery in October.  There will also be “agony aunts,”  experienced creatives who will freely offer advice on anything arty :)

PrintFinally, and back to Facebook, I have a gallery of a few images being hosted by  Deikos Galler Expo which is based in America.  I’ve had some pretty positive responses…at least I hope they are!  A lot of them are in Spanish and I am going on the number of exclamation marks….

Superb Animation!

Onwards from AKQA on Vimeo.

I found this on the Wooster Collective and it really blew me away.  Simple line drawing and cell animation put to such glorious effect I had to share it.

Pentimenti

Ever have a word stuck on the tip of your tongue?  This has been driving me nuts for weeks!  Thanks to Dave the life model for passing this on to me :)

“PENTIMENTI: Italian term from the word meaning “to repent”; refers to the lines  or marks which remain after an artist corrects his/her drawing (or painting.)  Traditionally, these marks remained unintentionally, in the quest for a perfect drawn figure for example.”
